2. Description of the Programme

The PGDip Psychological Therapies Practice (Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapies and Approaches) programme has been developed to further equip you with the knowledge and skills in Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Mindfulness-based Approaches (MBA).This programme particularly focuses on the skills required to be ready and competent to teach MBCT/MBA classes for clients. You will also be supported in a safe environment teaching to peers before moving to placements to begin to teach in real world settings under the supervision and guidance of an experienced MBCT/MBA teacher. Participation in a seven-day retreat at a retreat centre forms part of the programme.

Although there is not yet a nationally recognised MBCT/MBA professional qualification we are working closely with Universities of Bangor and Oxford to ensure appropriate standards.

The PGDip will follow successful completion of the PGCert Psychological Therapies Practice (Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapies and Approaches) programme available within Clinical Education, Development and Research (CEDAR) or an equivalent programme of study.

3. Educational Aims of the Programme

The PGDip Psychological Therapies Practice (Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapies and Approaches) aims to develop your readiness to offer MBCT/MBA to people in a setting specific to your professional orientation. You will develop competence in established evidence-based applications of MBCT/MBA assessed by using the Mindfulness-based Interventions - Teaching Assessment Criteria, and will also be able to contribute to the developing field of the application and evaluation.

5. Sustain and refine personal mindfulness practice and discuss its relevance in underpinning MBCT/MBA instruction
6. Select, organise and evaluate material to produce a coherent argument
7. Make use of supervision

Outcomes are developed throughout the programme and through an intensive residential retreat. Learning is then applied to the instruction of MBCT/MBA in a peer group setting, followed by a clinical setting. There are some additional training days to support further learning.

Whilst on placement there are weekly supervision sessions. Weekly notes are recorded of the supervision showing how the sessions are used.

All presented and written work attracts formative feedback from teachers that is intended to enable you to plan future improvements. You may discuss your progress further with programme staff during tutorials.

3000 word essay on ethics and values

4000 word written report of an MBCT/MBA group.

4000 word written report of an MBCT/MBA group that they instructed / co-instructed.

You must pass all the modules in the table above. The pass mark for these modules is 50% with an additional requirement to pass all individual assessments within individual modules. If you fail any modules you will not be permitted to continue with the programme and your registration as a student will be terminated with immediate effect.

Following successful completion of the PGDip, you will be permitted to progress onto the MSc Psychological Therapies Practice and Research (Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapies and Approaches). For progression to the MSc component there is an additional requirement to pass the module PYCM002 Methodological Approaches in Psychological Therapies Research. If successful the marks will not be included in the MSc award calculation.

A range of services is available to support your study both from within Psychology. These include:

Undergraduate applicants must satisfy the Undergraduate Admissions Policy of the University of Exeter.

 

Postgraduate applicants must satisfy the Postgraduate Admissions Policy of the University of Exeter.

Applicants must meet the following additional criteria:

  • Successful completion of the PGCert Psychological Therapies Practice (Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapies and Approaches)  and agreement from the programme lead to progress
  • A  degree in Psychology or related topic
  • Requisite personal and interpersonal qualities (e.g. genuineness, compassion, warmth, empathy, potency – please see item 2 of the Mindfulness-Based Interventions Teacher Assessment Criteria MBI-TAC in the handbook)
  • Attendance on an 8 week course with a teacherwho meets UK Network Good Practice Guidelines http://mindfulnessteachersuk.org.uk/#guidelines 
  • A professional qualification:
    • A health / mental health professional qualification and/or,
    • A counselling/psychotherapy qualification with appropriate certification and/or,
    • A complementary health practitioners qualification with appropriate certification and/or,
    • Another professional qualification with appropriate certification e.g. teaching qualification
  • Minimum of 2 years of post-qualification experience
  • Some relevant experience as a group facilitator
  • Knowledge and experience of the populations to which the mindfulness-based approach will be delivered, including experience of teaching, therapeutic or other care provision with groups and individuals.
  • A commitment to a personal mindfulness practice through daily formal and informal practice
