Module description

You will participate in 9 seminars per term during block week and at your Learning Set. These are one to one and a half hour supervision group meetings conducted by a psychoanalytic psychotherapist. In these meetings you will take it in turns with other participants to describe your clinical work with patients and to reflect with other participants on their clinical work.

All clinical cases presented for assessment must be ones seen in the placement agreed with the programme team. In exceptional circumstances a deviation from this principle may be considered by the programme team but should be requested in writing with clear justification for the deviation.

This module takes place in stage 1.

Module aims - intentions of the module

The aim of this module is to enable you to deepen your clinical skills by allowing you to learn from each other. In a small clinical seminar group, you will follow weekly clinical cases, facilitated by a senior clinical supervisor.

Group meetings (one to one and a half hours duration) during the block and in Learning Sets during term time. Participation is essential.

You will take process notes (a detailed record of each clinical encounter with your training case) to bring to the clinical seminar (as well as your placement supervision, see PYCM058 and PYCM061). These notes constitute a detailed clinical log of your work and should be available to be seen by your seminar leader. In the clinical seminar, you take turns in presenting these process notes. You are expected to participate in the discussion of clinical material and begin to link it to theory. The supervisor leads this discussion, and may provide additional theoretical material if s/he sees fit.

You also complete a detailed write-up (maximum 3000 words) of a specific aspect of a chosen case (this may demonstrate a particular clinical phenomenon or a particular psychoanalytic process as it occurs in the treatment). You will bring together relevant theory with the clinical description and understanding of the work with your patient. You will demonstrate your understanding of the theory and the clinical process with material from your ongoing process notes, from the clinical seminar and also from your placement supervision. This should demonstrate the extent to which you have been able to use both theory and the ideas and suggestions from others to increase your clinical understanding and practice.

Re-assessment notes

One assessment is required for this module. In all cases re-assessment will be the same as the original assessment. Where you have been referred/deferred for any form of assessment detailed above you will have the opportunity to retake within four weeks from the date that feedback was provided.

If you pass re-assessments taken as a result of deferral, your re-assessment will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment and the overall module mark will not be capped.

If you pass re-assessments taken as a result of referral (i.e. following initial failure in the assessment), the overall module mark will be capped at 50%.

If you fail re-assessments taken as a result of referral (i.e. following initial failure in the assessment), you will be failed in the module and as a consequence you will be failed in the programme and your registration as a student of the University will be terminated.
