Clinical Skills Competency Assessment

Video Recording

You will need to submit four therapy session video recordings over the course of the programme (two formative and two summative). Two of these (one formative and one summative) will be on an Assessment session for module 2, the other two (one formative and one summative) will be on an intervention session for module 3. Appropriate consent form(s) and front sheet should be included.

The recordings of your assessment sessions (for module 2) should be no longer than 45 minutes in duration. Please note that for marking purposes, marking will stop at 45 minutes and any further time left will not be marked.

The recordings for your intervention sessions (for module 3) should be no longer than 60 minutes in duration. Please note that for marking purposes, marking will stop at 60 minutes and any further time left will not be marked.

It is standard practice to record therapy sessions that can be given to the client to listen to or watch between sessions.

You will be expected to submit videos as part of the clinical assessment and bring these to supervision.  It is essential that you obtain the consent of your client and parents (where appropriate) for the recording to be used for supervision and/or assessment and submit this with your recording.  The consent form also asks whether your client will be willing for the recording to be used in future training.  You should consult your placement supervisor about your Trust’s policies on storing the recordings and transporting the clips and submissions to the University.

Recording Equipment

All services should provide trainees with recording equipment to make and transport video recordings securely.

Formative Guidance

Your formative recordings must be submitted by the deadlines.  The videos must be clearly audible and be of a complete session.  You must submit your video along with a completed front cover sheet as well as a reflective commentary (see below).

We would expect trainees to obtain 40% on their first formative recording.

Summative Guidance

Your final summative videos must be submitted by the deadline.  The video must be clearly audible and be of a complete session. Trainees MUST achieve an overall mark of 50%.
